The house has visitors

The house has visitors

The night came and went as fast as anything I can remember. My wish is that the 700 people that came to the event had a chance to enter the big crooked house and share in the interactive Dream Wall. There were 10 different artists who created their idea of a childhood fort, and each fort was very different, original, and creative. I used 500 square feet of cardboard and invested $100+ in materials, and it would’ve cost more if I didn’t have some generous donations of paint and painting materials (thank you Bill).

Joel's Dream House

"Little Dream House"

I worked on my Dream House/fort for two weeks and then realized I bit off more than I could chew…I needed some help – it was too big to put together myself (have you ever tried to build a house out of cardboard!?) After enlisting the help of a good friend, we had the house built and ready for the event in no time. Did I mention that my girlfriend was (and, as of this posting, is still) due to give birth at any moment?

The night started at 8pm with press visiting and asking questions (socal.com covered the event and so did LA Weekly) and things got really busy, real fast. The house was packed most of the night with visitors entering into an enchanted dream house where they could add their desire to the Dream Wall. Two Hundred Post-It notes later, the wall was filled with some funny, weird, and inspiring dreams and desires.

There was also a contest! The person who’s Post-It note inspired me the most wins a free 11×14″ matted print from my website. I also chose two runners up that will also get some free stuff! If you see your Post-It note below, all you have to do is contact me at: “joelharrisstudio at gmail.com” to claim your prize.

Thank you everyone who attended and was a part of the adventure that is and was FORT. Thank you cARTel for the opportunity to share THE DREAM.

Three days until the big day, I realized I need more help. I don’t have much experience building with cardboard, let alone building a 10x10ft cardboard house. Today I fully assembled the huge red roof and juggled it up a ladder while slipping and falling a few times. If I had a few other hands it would be so much easier. I didn’t think it would be this difficult. After all, it’s just cardboard, right?

I’ve been busy with commissions, getting ready for a new baby on the way, and lots of house cleaning, holiday shopping, and more… I had to figure out who would be available to give me a hand asap! I contacted a friend (Rap Healey) with a lot of cardboard construction experience, and I’m looking forward to his arrival tomorrow morning!! I know how I want this thing to look, I only need a little more help to bring this vision to life.

I have been working day and night to get this thing ready for FORT – it’s going to be so much fun!

The Venice Speakeasy, Venice CA

I just returned from a 2-week road trip into Nevada and Utah and was amazed at how beautiful the landscape was. It has been a long and rainy winter here in Topanga but this summer is going great! We are expecting a baby in December, the girls are all happy and healthy, and I am keeping busy in my art studio.

Live Painting July 2011

Live Painting July 2011 at Townhouse Gallery, Venice CA

Earlier this month I was invited to do some live painting, and then had a group exhibition at the Townhouse Gallery in Venice, CA.

TownHouse Gallery Exhibition July 2011 - Venice CA

I have enjoyed a nice 2-week break from painting, but I am back at it again…

After working on a new painting for 3 weeks, I am almost finished. The original idea for “Balanced Earth” came from a sketch I completed a few years ago. It really needs to be seen in person. It has a swirl of metallic silver paint in the background that does not show well on a computer screen. Also keep in mind that this painting measures 4ft x 4.5ft and is not as small as it appears here.

Balanced Earth

Balanced Earth, 4 x 4.5 ft, acrylic and oil on canvas

The inspiration for this piece came as I was thinking about how balance and harmony always exist – in every moment. Spending time in nature and observing how the miracle of life unfolds is a perfect example of this truth. We often forget that we are interwoven into the organic fabric of life and are One with its laws and movements. In this painting, the large tree rooted in the earth, growing upwards, is a visual representation of this idea. I chose to encircle the tree and earth in a rainbow to create a feeling of peace and tranquility – reminding us of the magic that surrounds us.

Often when astronauts view earth from outer space, they are amazed that so much suffering and unhappiness could exist on such a small peaceful looking planet. When others view this painting, I would like to inspire thoughts of balance, unity, and compassion.

Here are some upcoming events I would like to share with YOU :)

After 30 days, and many hours of detailed painting, my latest work is complete.

Details from the painting titled, Wisdom by Joel Harris

Details from the painting titled, WISDOM

“Wisdom” began as a pen and ink drawing 10 years ago. Before I began my exploration into painting, I only created sketchbook drawings with pen and ink, and all of my work was black and white – no color. After several years I had over 200 pen drawings and a pile of sketchbooks. I thought that someday those sketchbook drawings would make great ideas for paintings.

Wisdom Complete

Painting Complete: "Wisdom" Acrylic on Canvas, 3x4ft by Joel Harris

After almost 10 years of painting I am finally beginning to see what it will take to be a great artist. All of the ups and downs that I’ve been though over the years are finally beginning to teach me a great big lesson about creativity, passion, love, and expression from within. WISDOM is the first painting from a new body of work which draws from dreams, the subconscious mind, and my past experiences traveling within. My intention is to express this inner vision-inspiration with clarity and share it with others. Also, A special thanks to Barbara, my girlfriend, for your inspiration! You wanted to see some of my drawings come to life with color… and here it is!  MWA

Driftwood: paintings on recycled wood and found objects

1 week after the Topanga Flood of 2011, I went walking along the Beach near Topanga and found a huge amount of wood and debris washed up along the shore. I collected a small pile of wood and loaded up my van. I had been feeling like doing something with “found objects” with the emphasis on recycled art, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to explore in that direction. I have sold a few “driftwood” paintings so far and these remaining 11 pieces have been sent to an exhibition at DragonFire Gallery in Cannon Beach. OR.  Prices range from $40 – $249
